Beginning October

The Federal Election

The Federal Election is coming and students are getting ready to participate!   We have been exploring government systems with a focus on Canadian government.  Students should now know the difference between a dictatorship and a democracy, the levels of government, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the basic structure of our government.

We have just started our election project.  The class has been split into four groups, each group representing a different political party: Conservative, Liberal, NDP and Green.  Students will be researching their party's platform and then running a campaign that will culminate in a debate and finally a vote!  We will be combining our student vote with student votes from across Canada to see what future voters are thinking as a young nation.

Student vote takes place October 15th.  Please take the chance to discuss the election with your son or daughter to keep the excitement going.

Science

Students have taken a step back in time and explored our first thoughts of our planets shape and position in the Universe.  From Copernicus to Galileo, Newton to Einstein we have examined great minds that have shaped our understanding our of world.  Students have a test on Thursday, October 8th to show-off their knowledge.

Here is a website that allows you to explore our solar system, constellations and play with earth-centered and sun-centered models of the solar system: http://www.brightonastronomy.com/solarsystem.html

Our next science unit is Space exploration and the life of an astronaut.

Math

Students wrote their first math test on large numbers.  Well done!  Our next math unit is a mini-unit on problem solving and the four mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  If your son or daughter does not have his or her multiplication table memorized, now is the time to start practicing.

French

We are diving into the world of verbs.  Students have created songs to help memorize "to be" and "to have" (être et avoir) in the present tense.  Now we are looking at conjugating the rest of the verbs in the present.  Grade one students are going to help us out.

Our grade six students have been paired with grade 1 students to create an imaginative monster story.  The grade ones created the monsters, and the grade six will write a story inspired from the grade one's work.  Later, the grade six will have the chance to read to their story to their partner.  The grade six students are very excited to work with their little buddy, show a leadership role in the school and to show-off their new knowledge of verbs in the present tense.

ELA

What is hidden under the trapdoor of our classroom?  Students were tasked with the challenge of writing a story that reveals the mystery of our trapdoor.  At the end of the month, we will open the door and discover the truth....of the secret trapdoor of room 16!!!!!

We are reading the novel "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen, a classic grade 6 novel and survival, perseverance and problem-solving.  A young boy named Brian Robeson is stranded in the middle of the northern Ontario after a plane crash.  He has no one but himself to rely on.  How will Brian survive in the wilderness...alone?  Students are looking at vocabulary, comprehension and application of understanding during this read-aloud.
